Cindy May's letter to the St. Louis County Supervisor, 1972
NO ALTERATION
Handwritten letter retyped by Danya Gerasimova at Cindy May's request
Oct. 18 – 1972
Mr. Roos,
This is the first time I have had to write a letter like this, but it probably will not be the last. I understand that nothing will be done, but I intend to try!
As you probably know, I am referring to Portland Cement. It is a shame to have to live with the dust. We have lived here five and a half years. When we bought, no one told us about the cement dust. If we would have known, I’m sure we would not have bought here.
We bought a used car about 4 weeks ago. It was in excellent condition. There was not a scratch on it. I wish you could see it now. You would not believe what 4 weeks have done. The kids tried to wash the cement dust off the car with hot soapy water. It just scratched the windshield terribly. I tried to clean the windshield with soapy water. It didn’t work, so I rubbed lightly with 2 fingers about 4 times. To my surprise, my fingers were bleeding. I was very upset. If this does that to your fingers (the toughest part of your body), what does it do to your lungs?
My fingers are developed, but my children are not. Well, I want to know just what you are going to do about this.
I know the old story that they are in compliance with the laws but… When do you check Portland? During the week? Do you give them notice? The days I have heard you were checking or were going to check, there was no emission of dust. But afterwards, it’s so heavy that you are wondering if it was snowing outside.
I would like to invite you to park your car on my street for about one week. Of course you have money, and what’s a little paint job… We work hard for what we have. It’s not much, but it’s paid for.
Just what kind of answer will I get from this letter? A printed form that you send everyone? Will my letter go in the waste basket? Probably, but I’ll just write again. Something will be done someday, but the question is will you do it?
You just signed a proclamation to save wolves.
What will you do to save the children?
Elections will be coming up soon. I’m sure if you stop the cement elimination (for all times) you could count on the North County 100%.
Thank you
